Periodontology is a branch of dentistry that examines the structure of the soft and hard tissues surrounding the teeth, the diseases that occur in these tissues and the treatment of these diseases.
The main cause of gingivitis is poor oral hygiene and the resulting dental calculus, inflammatory diseases that affect the soft and hard tissues surrounding the teeth, especially the gums. When gum diseases are diagnosed early, they can be treated easily and successfully. Prevention or treatment of gum disease; It also brings other benefits such as the protection of natural teeth, more comfortable chewing and better digestion.
Gingival diseases start with gingivitis, which is the initial stage of the disease, also called gingivitis. In this initial period when the patient did not feel much discomfort, gingival bleeding started, the gums were enlarged and turned from light pink to darker red. At this stage, the disease manifests itself with color, deformities and bad breath in the gums.
In cases that are not controlled and treated in this process, the disease may progress to periodontitis and cause irreversible damage to the gums and alveolar bone that support the teeth. A periodontal pocket is formed between the tooth and gingiva. The presence of a periodontal pocket facilitates the localization of the infection and the progression of the disease. When gingivitis occurs and begins to increase, the bone tissue holding the teeth begins to dissolve.
As the disease progresses, the teeth start to shake and may even be extracted. Tooth losses caused by gingivitis are much more than tooth losses caused by caries.
